Winter Birding with Jane & Connie

January 21, 2015

A civilized 9 am start at Fletcher - Jane, Conne, Peggy & me.

We went first to the feeders out back and saw a nice group of House Finches.  Then we went to the other feeder at the edge of the field.  As soon as we go there, Peggy spotted a Barred Owl in the evergreen. Wow!

We looked around at some other trails - just in case.  Then we drove over to Grimes Rd in Aylmer to try for the American Three-toed Woodpecker - no luck.  We tried going into the woods on the well packed trail (hey, people must read this blog!), but we could not find it.  There were a few Hairys around, but not as many as before.  I decided to pack it in, happy with the owl find.

Sportsplex Trail 31

Jan 01, 2015

We decided to brave the cold winds today to check out a trail that we had not been to for years.  It was very quiet except for a Pileated Woodpecker that was at a backyard bird feeder, then flew briefly to a nearby tree.

Jack Pine Trail

Dec 31, 2014

Both Coyotes and an Ermine have been seen on this trail, as well as Black-backed Woodpeckers.  It certainly was worth a visit.

It was remarkably quiet when we went in the morning.  Only a single Downy Woodpecker could be found. We met Gillian who tossed some nuts and seed for the local jays and cardinals in the full sun for great photo ops.
