Derek Dunnett and Janet McCullough were leading today for the ailing Bernie Ladouceur. Considering the terrible forecast, there was a good turnout of about 15 OFO members. But the rain and sleet held off for most of the morning, so we had a good day!
We began on Frank Kenny and stopped immediately. A Rough-legged Hawk was hunting close by over the fields. (The leaders also saw an American Goshawk and an Osprey).
Giroux ponds were still frozen and the destruction of the rock spit was discouraging. Shortly after turning onto Dunning we came upon an estimated 3000 Snow Geese resting in the field. Then something put them up and we got the show.
From there we went to Milton Road. There were lots of flooded fields, but rather few waterfowl. However we did find some Northern Pintails, Green-winged Teals and a couple of Trumpeter Swans.
Derek suggested that we go to Cobbs Lake Creek where there is a lot of flooding. Once again, there were very few waterfowl. We turned down Conc. 9 and the rain came down heavily.
It was lunch time, so we decided to wrap it up. Derek and Janet had done a fine job of getting us on some good birds on a cold spring day!
