OFNC Ottawa River Afternoon Birding with Bernie Ladouceur and Bev McBride

October 5, 2019

We met at Pizza Pizza at Lincoln Fields.  There were about 16 birders whose experience ranged from beginner to expert. Bernie started out by explaining the 3 age variations in Ring-billed Gulls.

We moved to Mud Lake and checked various areas.  We saw 3 kinds of ducks – Mallard, American Wigeon and Wood Duck. And a Great Blue Heron did a fly past. An Eastern Phoebe perched briefly.  A young lad hand-fed a White-breasted Nuthatch and a Black-capped Chickadee with seeds from Barbara.

Our next stop was Shirley’s Bay boat launch.  Nothing was close, but a distant Red-breasted Merganser and Common Loon were scoped.

Our last stop was the west end of Andrew Haydon Park.  Here, there were several Green-winged Teals, some Lesser Yellowlegs and Killdeers.  Sharp-eyed Erik also spotted a Pectoral Sandpiper lurking in the distant reeds
