Spring at the Cottage

May 29, 2018

The trilliums are in bloom, including our special Painted Trilliums.  The Purple Finches have returned along with a cute but unwelcome friend.  And the trout have started biting. Ah spring!

Lots of photos and videos of the training at

I only had limited time for birding, but came up with a couple of gems, including a cooperative porcupine.

Twin Elm Road Again

May 23, 2018

It was much quieter this time as migration was winding down.  But we had a couple of highlights in a Blackpoll Warbler and male Northern Harrier.  Other resident birds observed were American Redstart, Blue Jay, Gray Catbird and Chestnut-sided Warbler.

Cottage Opening Weekend

May 18-21, 2018

There were so many birds it was hard to get our work done!  Highlights were the return of our Northern Waterthrush and excellent sightings of Magnolia Warbler.  Other warblers were Black and White, Black-throated Green, Chestnut-sided, Northern Parula and Ovenbird.  An exciting new bird for the cottage list was Fox Sparrow.  At the feeders we had Pine Siskin, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Ruby-throated Hummingbird.  Also on our walks, we saw Eastern Phoebe, Pileated Woodpecker, Veery, Red-eyed Vireo, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Spotted Sandpiper.

May 17, 2018

We only had time for a short day, so we only went back to our previous hot spot.  Nevertheless, we got a couple of good warblers.

The Opinicon Hotel and Cataraqui Trail

May 14, 2018

After out Murphy's Point OFO trip, we traveled to The Opinicon Hotel to celebrate our anniversary.

In the morning, we had a wonderful breakfast at the hotel, then borrowed a canoe and went for a paddle / birding.

Following our pleasant paddle, we drive the short distance to the Cataraqui Trail.

We then tried birding around Skycroft.  We got nothing new, but had a few close encounters with Ovenbirds.
