Ope Work Weekend

April 27-29, 2018

What a wet weekend it was!  All of the outdoor painting was cancelled, and the birding was tough too.  We even missed our reliable Pine Warbler. Best find was a Pine Siskin.

Ruff Quest Part 2

April 27, 2018

The Ruff was relocated a few km away off the Kinburn Side Road.  So we decided to try again.  At least, it was a much nicer day.

Well, the Ruff had departed, this time for good.  We scoped several areas and did find a single Snow Goose.  Then along came Carol ad Alan, who we had not seen since our India Trip in 2016!

They told us about the Trumpeter Swans at the location where we had looked for the Ruff the day before.  So off we went.  There were 6 or 7 of them, along with many Yellowlegs.

Quest for a Ruff

April 26, 2018

We got a report of a Ruff and a Snowy Egret in a flooded field between Kinburn and the Mississippi.  so we donned our rain gear and headed out. It was a terrible day with pelting rain and high winds.  In spite of that, a young guy was scoping in shorts!

Well, both targets had departed by the time we got there.  However, there were an amazing number of both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs.

We decided to go in to Arnprior to check the mouth of the Madawaska.  We were rewarded with a Merlin, cormorant and Easter Phoebe.

We returned to check the field again, noting a pair of American Black Ducks at the Mississippi.

There was still no action at Kinburn, but there were a lot more birders as the weather had improved somewhat.  We decided to go to Packenham and check out below the falls.  There we saw some swallows and a common Grackle.  The water was really pumping over the falls.

Back to Kinburn for one more try for the Ruff. It was not to be.  We saw a couple of American Wigeons and Green-winged Teals way at the back.

A nearby silo had a Raven's nest for Langis.

We checked the ravens at the Canadian Tire Centre.  They are out of the nest, but return from time to time to be fed by the parents.

Mud Lake & Andrew Haydon with JC Birding

April 25, 2018

It was  a very wet day, but a good one for hand-feeding birds.  Besides Chickadees, Nuthatches and Downy Woodpeckers, a Northern Cardinal came to Roy John's hand!

We got our first warblers - Yellow-rumped and Pine, and our first look at the NCC devastating clear cutting.

We moved to Andrew Haydon Park, then on to Dick Bell, where we had seen a Snowy Owl the week before (tip from Bob Cermak).  Surely it would not still be there?  Well it was, along with a buddy!
