Cottage Birds

May 26, 2019

We went up on Friday, stopping along the Gatineau Parkway where we saw Rose-breasted Grosbeaks.  Then we dropped in on Karine to see the renos.  During a slight delay leaving, Barbara got a Hairy Woodpecker.

We took the Martindale Road out of Low.  Although not as productive as in the past, we did see a Wilson's Warbler, an Eastern Kingbird and nesting Tree Swallows.

One of the reasons for going was to try the lake trout fishing, and we were successful.

On Saturday, we birded around our cottage, also enjoying the beautiful red trilliums.  The Nashville Warbler was a good find.

Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were visiting our feeders in droves.  We also had a short visit from a pair of Evening Grosbeaks as well as other regulars.

Trail 10 - Shirley's Bay

May 22, 2019

It was a rather short hike, but we saw a few decent birds, then came to a wet spot with much activity. We speculate that the trail was flooded beyond our turnaround.

A good day for warblers!  Best bird was the Magnolia.

Beryl Gaffney Park

May 21 2019

Remembering past successes, we headed out to try a different spot.

We took the right fork from the parking area, and soon found ourselves at a stream we could not safely cross.  So we bushwhacked south to the edge of the park and found a way to cross.  But it was too dense on the other side and we would have had to trespass to get around.  But the trilliums were at their peak.

So we hiked across the grass to the north where we found some huge stones that enabled us to cross.

We hadn't seen much, but when we came to a low spot, we got a Yellow-rumped Warbler and an Eastern Phoebe.

We also saw some Chestnut-sided Warblers and American Redstarts that were moving south along the path.

When the action petered out, we returned to the low spot where we got lots of views of a Northern Parula, and a few of a Canada Warbler.

So for a day that started out poorly, we had a good finish.
