May 10-12
We just missed ice out on May 9. The weather was rainy, cool and windy, so we just worked around and went for a few walks to visit with neighbours. Even the Turkey Vultures were waiting for some thermals.
There were many ducks on the water, especially Bufflehead which were flying back and forth all day. We also saw several male Common Mergansers and some Ring-necked Ducks. Barbara spotted our first Common Loon far off, and a Great Blue Heron flyover.
There were dozens of Purple Finches and many Rose-breasted Grosbeaks coming to our feeders. I put out the hummingbird feeder and got a visit right away.
We hiked over to the creek and talked to Dale about his new garage. A warbler was singing - I should know that one. Northern Waterthrush!
Colleeen also had many birds at her feeders, but her Baltimore Oriole did not show for us. A White-crowned Sparrow was on the lawn.
Back at our place no waterthrush was singing, but I played the tape anyway and got an immediate visit.
