Morewood Bog, Reveler Conservation Area and Black Rapids

 February 26, 2022

Jane saw a FB post from Mark G that there were White-winged Crossbills at Morewood Bog.  So we went to check it out for a possible JC trip.  We had stopped on the way at Mountain Provincial Wildlife Area to check the feeders, but there were only the usual suspects.  However, at Morewood, there was nothing at all, even though we hiked in a 1/2 km or so.  Oh well, of to nearby Reveler Conservation area, where there were also the usual feeder birds.

Bill hiked a short way down the trail, but saw nothing.  So we started back cross country on Route 400.  We saw 2 or 3 flocks of small brown birds at the roadside - our first Horned Larks of the season.

We eventually crossed the Rideau at Kars, and followed the river all the way to Black Rapids.  We were hoping for a sighting of the resident Mink, but got something better - a Common Merganser devouring a crayfish.
