Pine Grove Trail Again

 November 1, 2022

We resolved to head out early to have a better chance for the Three-toed Woodpecker.

We spent 2.5 hours there and only got a very brief and unsatisfactory glimpse of the target.  By way of recompense, there were dozens of Evening Grosbeaks flitting back and forth and occasionally perching.

We needed a break, so headed over to Long Island Locks to work on Barbara's Rideau River list. Best bird there was a Hairy Woodpecker.

When we got back to our car, an RBA came in that both the Three-toed and Black-backed Woodpeckers were back in the same spot at Pine Grove.  It only took us 15 minutes to get there.  However, it was too late as they had both left again.  We stayed another 45 minutes, but all we saw were many more Evening Grosbeaks and a pair of American Goldfinches.

As we were leaving, Paul Matthews pointed out a perched Fox Sparrow, always a nice find.

When we got home and finished some tasks, an RBA came in from Alan German that the Three-toed was back again.  Groan!
