Birding Report by Jane Burgess
Bill,
Barb C and I met at Mud Lake at 8:00 and walked over to where the
Winter Wren had been seen. On the way over we saw Dark-eyed Junco,
American Goldfinch and American Crows. We waited around the spot and
both Hairy and Downy Woodpecker as well as White-breasted Nuthatches
were seen, the Winter Wren had not made an appearance in the 1 1/2 hours
we waited. So we gave up.
We
walked behind the filtration plant and checked out the water / ice -
Canada Geese. We walked along the shore for a bit and were amazed at
all the Ring-bill Gulls on the island. I received a call from Ian to
say his grandfather duties were done and he was in the parking lot.
Good we will join you in a few minutes. Off come my rubber boots to be
replaced by hiking boots. We walked up to the hill and zip, nothing.
Well the Common Goldeneye were doing their head bobbing thing. Always
interesting to watch.
We
walked the trail and we were met with Mallards, more Downy and Hairy
Woodpeckers and White-breasted Nuthatch. We walked as far as we could
and turned around. We walked over to the outlook and we all were
impressed how well constructed the outlook was.
Back
at the vehicles, the White-breasted Nuthatch and the Woodpeckers were
hungry and came over every time we moved our arms or hands, sorry no
food.
At this point Bill and Barb C left as they had plans for the afternoon. A very quiet outing.
