A Loggerhead Shrike at Napanee Plain IBA

 April 27, 2024

We had an early morning birding trip in Prince Edward County on April 28, so decided to go down the day before and stop at the Napanee Plain to look for shrikes.

We went via Hwy 7 to Sharbot Lake, then south to Nugent Road.  Along the way, we saw a few things, but it was fairly quiet n this very scenic drive with wetlands everywhere.

The topography changed dramatically as we came to Nugent Road.  We stopped for a kestrel, then proceeded to the shrike habitat.   We stopped and spotted a shrike right away in the distance.  It left and we followed to the end of the road.  We saw the same shrike 4 different times and had a fly past by a Northern Harrier.

We had lots of time, so backtracked to Moscow Marsh.  While scoping a pair of Ring-necked Ducks, Jon Ruddy and his birding group arrived.  He had come from nearby Camden Lake and reported a group of Caspian Terns.

We proceed to the lake, climbed the tower and soon saw the terns and a couple of Common Loons.

We returned to Nugent Road, and this time the Loggerhead Shrike was closer for better photos.

We drove into Napanee, then down to Lake Ontario where we saw an Eastern Meadowlark.

We took the ferry at Adolphustown and made the short drive to Picton and our lodging at the Harbour Inn hotel.

We went for a walk to pick up some takeout, then returned and turned in early to get ready for our OFO trip in the morning.
