He's Back!

June 27, 2019

An adult Bald Eagle is back on lookout at Gand Lac des Cèdres.

Also on this day, we observed a mass transformation of dragonflies.

We also did our first loon count of the year.  The results were disappointing, as the only nest observed had been abandoned, leaving an egg out in the open.

Richmond Conservation Area

June 23, 2019

We wanted to explore the area behind the ponds over to and along the Jock River.
We had a Hooded Merganser on the second cell, and a Cowbird and Yellow Warblers along the river. We also saw a number of Northern Leopard Frogs.

A New Duck for our Cottage List

June 22, 2019

It was just the two of us taking our newly-repaired canoe back up ot the lake.  So, we detoured at Lac Ste Marie to check a couple of wetlands.

We decided to go up past Peggy's cottage on Heney Lake and cross back over the river at Gracefield.  We managed to get a bit lost for a while, but got a bonus Bobolink in one of the farm fields.

The next morning, Barbara spotted an unusual duck on our dock.  We had never seen a Blue-winged Teal before at our lake.  There was also a Common Merganser sharing the dock space.

We were anxious to try out the canoe, and got a Great Blue Heron and Common Loon on our paddle.

Later we bbq'd at steak; had to wear a bug jacket because of the flies.

Morris Island and Dunrobin

June 19, 2019

We were having our canoe repaired (tree fell on it) at the Trailhead workshop in West Carleton.  It is located in the backyard of one of our former Venturers, Cole Pruden.

After picking up the canoe, we went to Morris Island Conservation Area for a hike.  We were surprised to see Yellow Lady's Slippers and Northern Map Turtles here.

We got a few common birds, but the persistent singing Scarlet Tanager did not show itself.

As we left the island, we rescued a Midland Painted Turtle of the road, then saw another one laying eggs on the shoulder.

We decided to go home by Dunrobin to check for bluebirds again.  And this time we saw a pair and Tree Swallows too!

Biking at Parc National Plaisance

June 17 19

We were looking after the boys today, so went to Thurso to bike the trail in the park and then we took Sam directly to his baseball game in Gatineau afterwards.  The trail had been flooded in the spring, so had a few rough spots.  Birding highlight was a Willow Flycatcher.
