Trans Canada Trail - Stittsville

 July 26, 2022

A Sedge Wren had been reported several times from the viewing deck on this trail, so we decided to try for it.  We parked and hiked about 1 km to the deck.

We saw a few common birds as we hiked along.

We spent about 40 minutes at the observation deck, watching and listening for the Sedge Wren, with no luck.  There were many Barn Swallows flitting about over the marsh and occasionally landing in a nearby tree.

So, we walked further west along the trail and saw an Alder Flycatcher and a few Eastern Kingbirds.

Then we returned to the deck and checked again.  We were about to leave when Barbara said what's that little bird? It was the Sedge Wren!

A lot of photos later, we started back.  When we came to a little opening off the trail, we heard a Great Crested Flycatcher, and soon saw it.  A juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was at the same place.

We drove home to download our photos, when Barbara, looking out the window, saw two Northern Flickers on our back lawn.  An adult was feeding ants to a juvenile.  What a day!
