A Red-Shouldered Hawk

February 10, 2020

Following up on an eBird report, we headed out to Trail Road after lunch.  After proceeding slowing down the road, which is beside the dump, we spotted some cars with birders stopped up ahead.  Sure enough, there was our target bird on a wire.  But as we drew near, it flew off before we could get a photo.  We drove back and forth along the road, hoping it would return.  We talked to some other birders including Colin and Martha, but could not relocate the hawk.  So we decided to head out to Richmond to look for Snow Buntings or Snowys.  We were rewarded with a nice male Snowy Owl on the ground in a field north of Aikins.

We never did see any Snow Buntings or Horned Larks.  We took Cambrian back to Trail Road for another look for the juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk.  Another birder we saw said it was back.  And so it was on a wire in nearly the same spot!

After lots of photos, it flew off to hunt.

It did not go far.  In fact we saw it plunge to the ground at one point.  Then it returned to it's place on the wire. What a great sighting on a beautiful day.
