Mud Lake Carolina Wren at last

February 24, 2020

We had visited Mud Lake, Trend-Arlington and Elmhurst Park many times and always dipped.

We decided to try Mud Lake right after breakfast.  We slowly made our way along the west side checking out the woodpeckers, chickadees, cardinals and nuthatches.

When we turned east at the south end of the lake, I spotted a wren on a stump feasting on seeds that birders had left.  Yes, it was the elusive Carolina Wren.

After a few photos, it flew off to a nearby tangle. We thought it was gone, but it slowly emerged and gave us some really good looks.

Now we had seen both Mud Lake wrens.

Later we visited Billings Bridge and Black Rapids, but we only saw Mallards and a few distant Common Goldeneyes.
