Rideau Trail West from Brownlee

 January 12, 2021

We parked at Brownlee & Huntley, but first checked Aikins Rd for Snowy Owls and Snow Buntings.

We planned to hike to the hydro line, where we had turned around when hiking east from Bleeks Road on December 19.  Well, our plan was shot when we saw a Long-eared Owl!  The extent of our hike is marked by a red line on the map.

We flushed the owl, not knowing it was right beside the trail.  It did not go far and we were able to creep up and get some shots.  It was nervous, and flew ahead several times with us creeping along to find it again.  Finally, it turned back, and so did we, ending our hike.

We met one person, a new Canadian, who was hiking the entire Rideau Trail bit by bit to experience the essence of Canada!  The other interesting thing was getting a whiff of a mustelid, but although we saw a few tracks, could not see the animal itself, presumably a Pine Martin or Fisher.
