Murphy's Point OFO Trip with Mark Read

 May 14, 2023

We were up at 5:45 am and Bill got the all-important coffee brewing.  Soon we were on our way for the short drive to the Lally Homestead to meet the group for the OFO trip led by Mark Read, the park superintendent.  We got a surprise when our birding buddy, Barb C called to say she was in the park and coming to join us.  So we had two Barbaras on this Mother's Day hike.

Lots of birds were singing in the parking lot.  And we were not disappointed on the Silver Queen Mine Trail.

Highlights were multiple Blue-winged and Golden-winged Warblers.  Mark said there were hybrids too.  A lot of other warblers also entertained us.

We returned to the parking lot, then hiked the Lally Trail where we saw an unexpected Bobolink among other goodies

We drove to the main part of the park and hiked a trail and roadway by the day use area.  We heard a few things but could not get any photos.

When the OFO trip was over, Barb C came back to our campsite for lunch.  We had a champagne and orange juice to toast Mother's Day.

Barb C departed for home, while we took down our tent and vacated our site.  Before leaving the park, we drove to the campers' beach where we saw a Chipping Sparrow and a couple of kids in swimming.  Brr.

Then we headed back to the Lally Homestead parking lot to try to get better photos of some good birds.  We were successful in photographing an Indigo Bunting, White-crowned Sparrow and Golden-winged Warbler.  Near the washroom, there was an Eastern Towhee and Yellow Warbler.

What a great trip we had to Murphy's Point.
