Field Trip to Beaver Meadow and Sandbanks

June 3, 2018

There was no organized bird walk on the Sunday, but we went off on our own anyways.  We managed to add a Swamp Sparrow and Killdeer to our list, and we saw the Northern Flickers doing a ritual feeding.

We got a bus to Beaver Meadow along with many other attendees at the conference.  We hiked the trails around the pond, stopping at key spots.  We saw more Black Terns, and endangered species, and a Belted Kingfisher with a fish.  Other birds seen were a Baltimore Oriole, House Wren, Eastern Phoebe and Green Heron.  There were lots of wildflowers, including the most Jack-in-the Pulpits I have ever seen.  Barbara was led to a Wood Thrush nest. We had an American Toad, a Gray Tree Frog and a Spotted Salamander.

Our next stop was Sandbanks Provincial Park where we were greeted by the park naturalist for our hike on the dunes trail.

Birds seen were Eastern Kingbird, Mallard and Brown Thrasher. The drizzle finally turned to rain and we hurried back to our bus.
