Sandbanks Provincial Park

June 1, 2018

We would be staying down the road for the Ontario Nature Conference, so decided to go early and enjoy a day at Sandbanks.

We registered at the park, then proceeded to the Lakeshore Lodge Day use area to have our lunch.  We were entertained by a couple of House Wrens and flocks of Purple Martins.

We hiked part of the Lakshore Trail.  Birding was slow in the forest yielding only a Red-eyed Vireo and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

Things picked up when we came to a shortcut trail back through a cleared scrubby area.  We immediately got a Baltimore Oriole, Song Sparrow and many butterflies.

We returned to our car, and drove to the Outlet river boat launch, where we launched our canoe.

We paddled up to East Lake, then returned to Lake Ontario on the narrow easy-paddling river.  We saw a female oriole, Eastern Kingbird, Great Crested Flycatcher, watersnake, and many Map Turtles.

After a delightful afternoon, we packed up and drove down the road to Isiah Tubbs Resort to attend the Ontario Nature Annual Gathering.
