We met at Champlain Bridge and carpooled from there to Lac Leamy – Bill, Barbara, Eleanor & BarbC. We were hoping to see a Boreal Owl, but not too confident.
We hiked the trails and saw several other photographers on the same mission. This gave us hope, but no one that we met had seen the target owl.
At the feeders, there were Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers and a few American Goldfinches along with the ubiquitous chickadees.
There were several deer in the forest and a sizeable flock of Bohemian Waxwings.
Heading back, we took a side trail which led in the wrong
direction. So, we had to retrace our steps. Lucky us!
We came out right near a cooperative perched Barred Owl, that we would
have missed otherwise.
We went back to our vehicle and ate lunch in the car. After we went to the City of Gatineau ski and
snowshoe rental outlet to use the washroom.
We hiked south on the trail beside the Casino hotel, hoping to see a Hermit Thrush that has often been reported by a water seep. But today there were only Mallards, Cardinals and Nuthatches.
We had had a good day exploring most of the trails in the
forest by Lac Leamy. BarbC said “seeing
one owl is a lot better than none”.
Eleanor prepared the eBird checklists. Thanks.
