South of the Airport and Mer Bleue with Gord Belyea and Ann MacKenzie

May 16, 2012 - 6:30 am

Besides Gord & Ann, there were Connie, Nadine and me today.

From Connie's report: " Great day birding for sparrows south of the Airport today and only a bit of fine rain.  No sun however so no birds basking in the sun to warm up!  Thanks to Gord Belyea and Ann MacKenzie for leading us.  We had excellent views of  7 sparrows today in the High Road area:  Chipping, Clay-coloured, Field, Grasshopper, Savannah, Song, White-throated.  The Vesper Sparrow is there somewhere but not making an appearance today.  We added Swamp Sparrow at Mer Bleue later.

Also some good warblers today:  Black-and-White (heard), Chestnut-sided, Mourning (m, f), Yellow, and Palm (Mer Bleue).  We saw Orioles, Bobolinks, Eastern Bluebirds, Eastern Meadowlarks, Indigo Bunting, and Alder Flycatcher.  South of the airport we heard many Common Yellowthroats but could not seen any.  Finally we found one at Mer Bleue!  Also there we heard the Sora and saw a Virginia Rail. "
