Brenda and Ed sold their cottage on Blue Sea Lake, but continue to have an interest in the area, especially the biding. We met them at the Blue Sea parking lot for biking and birded there where we had good luck recently. But it was quieter this day.
Brenda led us to check out Chemin du Lac Edja Ouest where we stopped at Petit Lac Perdu and hiked on the road down to Lac Edja. Yelowthroats were indeed common, but the best bird was a calling perched Broad-winged Hawk. The call was a lot like a Pewee!
From there we moved on to the Messines bike trail parking lot. The Indigo Bunting only made a quick fly over, but some other birds were more cooperative.
We drove to Farley and had lunch at the picnic table. Then we backtracked to Lac Laverdure, where we hiked the trail back towards Messines. We saw some nice warblers and wetland species.
We were crossing a large puddle on the dirt road to the golf course, when Bill noticed a couple of bikers going past quickly. Suddenly, the lady in the rear went down and vanished from sight. When she did not reappear, he shouted that we needed to help. Rushing over, we found her lying in the swamp on her back trapped under her bike. She was calling for her boyfriend, Andrew, who had pedaled on unaware. Bill got her bike off and he and Brenda managed to pull her out while Ed gave her water and reinstalled her chain. She was badly shaken, but uninjured. Her sweaty hand had slipped off as she was approaching a gate, and she careened into the ditch. Oddly, she was biking in her underwear because of the heat. We had her sit on the gate to wait 15 minutes for Andrew to come back. Barbara gave her some aspirin. Finally she was able to get on her bike. They had to go all the way to Gracefield, a distance of 25 km!
We recrossed the puddle, but realized that a storm was brewing, so we decided to quit and head back to our cars.
It was fun to bird with Brenda and Ed again.
