Indian River and Clayton Lake Paddle

July 4, 2020

While checking out the launch area, Barbara spotted a Red-eyed Vireo.

We launched in the muck downstream of the bridge, then had to duck to go under it.

The creek was alive with juvenile Eastern Kingbirds and Wood ducks.

We encountered a family group of cooperative Belted Kingfishers.

We enjoyed paddling the meandering creek, but we came to a rocky area with a partial  beaver dam.  Not wanting to step out into the muck, we retraced our route.  This time we came upon a Green Heron.

It was lunch time, but there was no good stopping place. So we went back under the bridge and found a place on a small island in the lake.

We had a leisurely lunch enjoying the dragonflies and flowers.

After lunch we paddled out into the lake proper, and saw a pair of loons and a surprising pair of Lesser Scaup.

The breeze came up against us, and we worked to get back to the start.  We dragged our canoe out and loaded up.  We took a back road to Almonte and considered stopping for a milk shake, but the line up was too long.  We stopped at the Burnt Lands and hiked out to the building and back.  Going out, we only saw a Cedar Waxwing.

But coming back to the car, we saw a Savannah, Song and Clay-colored Sparrows.

Finally, it was back into the AC and homeward bound.  A great day!
