Bill was convinced that there would be nobody at the High Lonesome Nature Reserve since it is rather far out of town near Mount Packenham. Well, he was wrong! There must have been 20 cars parked along the road. Well, at least we did not have to use our snowshoes (we carried them) as the trails were well packed by hikers on foot.
We completed the trail around Joel's Pond, returning via the Sleeping Doe connector trail without seeing a single bird. We decided to eat our lunch in the car and to return home via back roads. We took Hwy 29 as far as Blakeney, crossed over the Mississippi and headed into Almonte via Martin St. We saw a flock of birds fly over, likely crossbills. But when we turned around to look for them they were gone. Instead, we saw a perched Merlin.
We carried on to Golden Line Road, and on to Old Almonte Road to look for the Eastern Towhee at Fine Estate. The feeders were hopping, and Bill thought he got a glimpse of it, but after a long wait, it did not return.
Not many good sightings, but nice drive in rural Lanark County.
