Eastern Towhee

 March 7, 2021

After 4 unsuccessful visits to 3974 Old Almonte Road to try for the towhee, we decided to heed the homeowners advice and come early.  We left home at 6:15 and the sun was just coming up as we arrived.  Although dim, we could see fairly well.

That finished when the sun rose higher and shone directly at us.  We were forced to move around the yard to get the sun at our side; not an ideal location.  It was -16 and breezy, so we soon took turns retreating to the car to warm up our hands and feet.

Most of the time, the feeders were fairly quiet, but around 7:45 the tree sparrows and other feeder birds showed up.  Then, shortly after 8 am, the towhee appeared, not at a feeder, but in the trees at the far side of the yard.  Thanks to the 600mm lens, we were able to get some good shots.

We were very pleased to finally get this bird. But we were extremely cold, and had the heater on full all the way back down Dwyer Hill Road.  Of course, we could not pass Eagleson without checking for Snowies.  Yes, there was one on a pole right at the corner of Aikins.  Another success!

We cruised the side roads to see a few Horned Larks and Snow Buntings.

Then it was off to home for a hot shower!  A very successful, though cold, outing.
