Ottawa--Greenbelt Pathway West

 May 26, 2021

We returned to the ponds behind Smithvale Stables to look for the Wilson's Phalaropes.  On the hike in, we heard many Common Yellowthroats and Song Sparrows.

There was nobody else there and we were able to scope without distraction.  It wasn't looking good, but suddenly Bill caught a brief glimpse of one of the phalaropes.  We were joined by Colin and Martha who helpfully pointed out a couple of Solitary Sandpipers, Greater Yellowlegs and a Wilson's Snipe.  We saw the phalarope a few more times, but we were unable to get a photo.

She wandered back looking for the Cuckoo that Colin had heard, but did not see it.  Instead she got several other common birds and a beautiful Indigo Bunting.

We stopped off at the Shirley's Bay boat launch and Barbara photographed a Mallard family and a Killdeer at the beach.

Before going home, we drove into the Nortel Campus (now DND) to check out the ponds, and were rewarded with a Spotted Sandpiper, a Canada Goose family and another Killdeer.
