Barred Owl Nest and an Orchard Oriole

 May 29, 2021

We always intended to look for the nest near the Wild Bird Centre that we had seen last year.  Hearing that Guy was there while we were on an EDS Zoom meeting, spurred us to action.  Arriving early, were just in time to see the baby at the doorway with mama resting nearby. We met Bonnie & Guy there and enjoyed chatting with them while swatting mosquitos.  We headed around the corner to check out the bridge, but best bird was a distant Great Crested Flycatcher.

Before leaving home, we checked the eBird RBA and were completely surprised that Judith had gotten the Orchard Oriole after we had left.  So, since we were half way there anyway, we decided to give it another shot.  We arrived at the viewing platform and scanned the trees.  A Baltimore Oriole was flitting back and forth.

We waited a good half hour without seeing much.  Bill pointed out a Killdeer in the next cell, and while photographing it, Barbara also spotted four or five Least Sandpipers.

Bill saw a distant pair of Blue-winged Teals.

A couple of other birders came by and staked out a tree across from the platform.  We were on the verge of giving up, when one of them called to us that our target was in the tree. Indeed we did spot it being pursued by a Baltimore Oriole.  It was really buried, but the saving grace was that it was softly singing, enabling us to hone in on it.
