This is a extension of Larry Neily's Marlborough Forest series that extends just outside of the 50k circle. We came via 416 and Roger Stevens Drive.
We knew that shrikes had not been seen there for years, but it looked like it would be a neat area for other scrubland species. In fact, while stopped along the road, a car pulled up with a guy that said he was checking for shrikes!
As we turned onto the road from Roger Stevens, we saw several Barn Swallows over the fields and on the wires.
The first stretch of road was very swampy with lot of Chorus Frogs singing, so Barbara suggested that we play the song for Northern Waterthrush. Amazingly, we got a faint response and the bird came in and perched right above us. We had our second warbler of the season.
Further along the road, we found ideal scrubland habitat, so we got out and scanned. There was not much out except a Chipping Sparrow.
We slowly drove to the end of William Campbell and decided to check out the north end of Weedmark as well. Here we heard a couple of Brown Thrashers and were able to track one down.
We retraced our route and saw an American Kestrel hunting in the fields.
We drove the length of Montague Road without seeing anything. The bluebird habitat no longer exists, as far as we could tell. On Beckwith Boundary Road, we heard and photographed another thrasher.
We went home by Richmond Road, checking for meadowlarks, but saw none this time.
