A fairly large group gathered at Petrie Island for this popular outing led by Bob Cermak and Bernie Ladouceur. Bob was just getting back in shape after a serious bout with cancer. So good to see him!
Barbara hiked around taking photos while the others were chit chatting. The ponds where we parked were still frozen, so birds were limited, although we did spot a Great Blue Heron perched in a distant tree.
After a stop at Timmys, we headed to Giroux to look for field and pond birds. We did quite well, but the absolute highlight of the day was a fly past of 14 Sandhill Cranes.
We then did a few stops on Frank Kenny and Milton Road where we had 3 very distant Tundra Swans.
We tried Carlsbad Lane, but only got a Song Sparrow, Killdeer and another kestrel.
We birded from the car window, so somehow missed the instructions for the next stop. All we heard was that we were going to Bourget. At Russell and Dunning, some cars turned north while others went straight. We turned north, but did not see any familiar cars. So we shortly did a U turn and headed to Bourget. But there was nobody there and no birds either. Oops! So the rest of the day, we were on our own. We retraced some of Ken's routes including the famous Birchgrove. (No partridge!)
We took French Hill all the way back and decided to have another look at Giroux, where we got a few more waterfowl photos.
We decided to return to our staring point at Petrie Island to look for the otters that another participant had seen. No otters, but we did see a huge resting beaver and several muskrats on the ice, as well as lot of Hooded Mergansers. The trail was flooded and impassable in places.
