We spent a half hour on Viewbank Road looking for Vesper Sparrows. There were plenty of Song Sparrows and a few American Tree Sparrows, but no Vespers.
Another birder told Barbara he had just come from Dilworth Road where there were lots of birders viewing ducks a a flooded field. A quick check of Discord revealed that they were on a Common (European) Teal. So, we decided to go and try for it. It was a little further away than we had realized. When we got there, we saw Lorraine scoping the field. She thought she had it, but we moved across the mud for a closer look. Then, there was no sign of any teals. Then, Rick arrived and could add nothing, so we left; it was freezing in the bitter wind.
Shortly after, a Northern Harrier flushed the birds, and the teals emerged from their hiding place. Rick tried to text me, but only had my home number, and Lorraine had forgotten her phone at home. Oh well, maybe we'll get another chance. We drove up McCordick to Richmond, then on to Twin Elm. The Osprey was sitting on the nest.
We drove down to the dead end and spotted 4 Greater Yellowlegs - first of spring! These rescued our day from a total loss.
