Andrew Haydon Park and P19 Trail

 October 25, 2022

There were no recent reports, so we decided to check out Andrew Haydon Park.  We went first to Ottawa Beach, but the water level was too high for shorebirds.  Nevertheless, we got a few goodies.

We hiked over to the west part of the park where a lady asked Bill in French to help her with her Nikon. It was not complicated - the lens was not in good contact with the body.  She was so happy!

A Great Blue Heron was sitting on a rock in the westmost pond the whole time we were there.

The best find was a small group of White-winged Scoters.

A few other common birds were in the bay.

A Belted Kingfisher came close with a fly past, and the heron seemed to be drying its wings.

We went home for lunch, but got an RBA that a male American Three-toed Woodpecker was seen on Trail 19 off of Leitrim Road.  So off we went.  We met a lady who told us to go clockwise to avoid the impossible deadfalls, a result of the derecho, on the other end of the trail

There were many others birders out looking, all to no avail.  We met Derek and Eric.  They had heard some tapping, so Derek bravely crawled through the deadfall for 40 minutes without getting it.

Colin and Martha also appeared.  They had gone the wrong way on the trail and had had a tough time. Martha spotted a Fox Sparrow which stayed for a few photos.  On the trail back, we saw an Eastern Garter Snake.  The woodpecker was not reported again, the same as the previous female.
