Mud Lake and Razorbill Search

 October 24, 2022

There were no interesting reports, so we decided to go to Mud Lake.  As we were collecting our gear, Barbara noticed a Pileated Woodpecker at our backyard feeder. A good start!

We parked at Rowat Ave. and checked the fence line and nearby area with no luck.  So we headed down to the main path, and soon found some goodies, including a Fox Sparrow.

We intended to go to the bridge, but we met a lady who told us that it was closed and to be replaced by a metal bridge.  So we scanned from the back of the lake and saw some American Wigeons.

We returned to our car via the fence line, and found a Cottontail Rabbit right beside it.

We thought we would bird the ridge, so drove around to park on Cassels.  We spotted a photographer working the field, so we joined him.  He had a Golden-crowned Kinglet in the trees. We never would have seen it if it had not been for him.

There was nothing on the ridge, so we drove to the river at Jamieson to check.  There was a Red-breasted Merganser close to shore.

We headed home for lunch, then an RBA came in.  Razorbill on the Ottawa!  Back we went.

We arrived at Deschenes Lookout just in time to see it fly upriver.

We headed back to Britannia Point by Mud Lake to try from there.  Ken and other birders were there, but the views were poor and distant.

We hoped to try again another day.
