Upland Sandpipers were reported again this year at the corner of Panmure and Dwyer Hill Roads. We drove out there and scanned the fields, soon spotting one. We scoped it and got a few distant photos.
Several Eastern Meadowlarks were singing their spring song, but they were hard to spot. A Savannah Sparrow was more cooperative.
Another car was stopped closer to the intersection. We recognized Bev S. so stopped to chat. She showed us additional Upland Sandpipers, perhaps 5 in all. Another couple of new but enthusiastic birders also stopped by.
We checked out Dwyer Hill Road as far as Vaughn Road, then returned to take Panmure over to Blakeney. Along the way, we saw a pair of American Kestrels, an Eastern Bluebird, some Tree Swallows and a close by Eastern Meadowlark. Yeah!
The Mississippi River at Blakeney was really roaring, and the park was closed.
We took a short detour on Conc. 9, off Cedar Hill Side Road, then headed to Pakenham to try Scoops. It was open! After our treat, we headed towards Arnprior, then cut over to Holland Marsh. There was only one Greater Yellowlegs among the many Canadas.
We took Kinburn Side Road all the way over to Dunrobin Road, then took Vance's to the bridge. Bev S and the other couple were there too. We saw a Broad-winged Hawk fly high overhead and heard a few Virginia Rails, but could not see any.
We stopped at the nearby gravel pit and checked it out. It was good. Killdeers, Greater Yellowlegs, Trumpeter Swans and American Wigeons.
We went to the bridge on Thomas Dolan where the Osprey was on the nest. There were lots of Virginia Rails calling, but none came out. The only ducks were distant Ring-necked.
After checking out Berry Side Road, we headed to the CTC to check on the raven nest. It's a good thing we did. The 5 babies had hatched and were begging for food.
We had a great day, and the forecasted rain never came.
