Bicycle Birding to Pincrest Creek plus Stoney Swamp Barred Owl

May 6, 2020

It was another fine spring day, so we went on our first bike ride to Pinecrest Creek. We no sooner got there when we started seeing Yellow-rumped Warblers.  They were all up and down the path.  We also saw our first Black and White Warbler of the season and a Downy Woodpecker.

There was a lot of LRT construction north of Iris, so we checked out a path right behind the houses on the east side of the bike trail.  It looked promising and we did see an Eastern Phoebe.

On the way home, we detoured through Centrepointe Park to check out the pond.  There were lots of Red-winged Blackbirds and other common pond inhabitants.

We went home to relax for a while, but got a message from Jane that the Barred Owl was facing the other way so that they could see it's head.  Off we went.  We soon arrived and met Jane and Sami, who had had a full day.

After checking out the Wild Turkeys, we headed down to see the owl.  Sure enough, she was looking right at us.

We headed over to the boardwalk and saw a Pileated Woodpecker and several White-throated Sparrows on the ground.

We started back up the trail when we decided to look for the owl mate in the forest to the south.  Instead, Barbara found a Northern Flicker excavating a nest hole.

It was another great day of birding close to home.
