Stonebridge Trail

May 8, 2020

It was a very chilly day.  The goldfinches were all puffed up to conserve heat.  We briefly saw a wren at our backyard feeder, but couldn't get a positive ID.  Most likely the neighbourhood Carolina Wren.

We parked at Maplehill Way, and hiked on the Stonebridge Trail extension north towards the Jock River.  Wildflowers were in bloom. It was chilly - gloves and toques time!  In spite of that, we saw a few hikers and dog walkers. Near the beginning of our hike, we saw many Yellow-rumped Warblers.  Then we got a single Palm Warbler.

It was quiet for a while, then we saw a Northern Flicker.

We came to a grove of pine trees and several Pine Warblers were singing.  We were short of time because we had a webinar to attend at noon.  Finally one of the Pine Warblers came close and sat out nicely for us.

Driving home, we noticed some shorebirds at a large pond in the field along Greenbank.  So after our webinar on hawks identification, we biked down the path along Greenbank.  We discovered that the path was too sunken to give us any view, so hiked up onto the shoulder of the road.  They were distant, but we were able to pick out a Greater Yellowlegs and a couple of pairs of Green-winged Teals.

It was getting really cold, but we decided to bike along Siskin Court to pick up the bike trail and go home through the woods.  Barbara managed to get some photos of a couple of Ruby-crowned Kinglets.
