We left the cottage in the morning and
headed for Messines. Just before Chemin
des Trois Collines, we had an astonishing sight. An American Bittern slowly made it’s way
across the paved road from right to left.
We took Hwy 105 to Gracefield and crossed
the Gatineau River.
We stuck as closely as possible to the river, taking Chemin du rapide
Faucher and Chemin de la Chute. We made
a few stops along the way to view Rock Pigeons and Cedar Waxwings. At a low spot with water on both sides of the
road, we saw a Killdeer, Eastern Phoebe and Chestnut-sided Warbler. Presently we came upon a Ruffed Grouse
standing stock still at the side of the road. It slowly ambled across from left
to right. We saw some birds in a tree on
the shore opposite Alwyn – a Black-billed Cuckoo and a Red-eyed Vireo.
We carried on to Lac Sainte Marie, then
took Chemin Martindale. With Lac Manitou in the distance, we came upon a field
of Bobolinks.
We stopped and also saw a
pair of Eastern Bluebirds feeding young in a nest in a hydro pole.
We also saw a Barn Swallow and a Brown
Thrasher.
