First Loon Count of 2020

June 10, 2020

Barbara was up before dawn to photograph the sunrise.

As it got a bit brighter, she saw a perched hummingbird.

After breakfast, we set out on our loon count.  We counted 8 adult loons, but saw no nests or chicks.

We saw an eagle perched on Ile Gladu, near the nest site.  It was being harassed by a Blue Jay, but seemed to take no notice.

Near the north end of the lake, we saw a Canada Goose.  We have seen migrants on other years, but these may stick - hope not!

We also saw a gull on the traditional nesting rock. Bill was able to identify it quickly as a Herring Gull with it's pink legs and mean-looking yellow eye.

At Gull Rock, there were no gulls, and no loon on the most favorable nesting spot.  Instead, a Common Tern seemed to be on a nest.

Later, we went for a paddle in Sylvester's Bay, where we saw a couple of Common Mergansers loafing on a rock.
