Maniwaki and Tourné des Eaux

June 15, 2020

We had a few things to get in Maniwaki, so decided to go to both lumber stores then check out the birding at once of our hotspots across the highway from Martel's BMR.  But first we stopped at Chemin Galipeau. There were Yellow Warblers, Common Yellowthroats, a Gray Catbird and an Eastern Kingbird.  But the star of the show was a Broad-winged Hawk that circled close overhead.

As we entered Kitigan Zibi, we noticed a hummingbird perched on a wire - a somewhat unusual sighting. Then around the corner, a mother deer with a newborn fawn crossed the road.  We were too slow on the camera, and only got the spotted body of the youngster as it vanished into the bush.

At the KZ boat launch, there were a dozen or more Tiger Swallowtails at a mineral lick by the shore.

We went through town to Martel's then across the road to our spot at the north end of Lac Evens.  We had our lunch then hiked around.  Being after 12, it was a bit quiet.  We managed to photograph a couple of warblers and also saw a redstart.

Afterwards, we took the Tourné des Eaux loop which goes along the west side of the Gatineau River north of town. It was a beautiful pastoral landscape, very birdy.

We saw a couple of Eastern Meadowlarks flying around the field, then landing on the ground.  But by the time we stopped and got out of the car, they were off across the road, and we were lucky to get a flying shot.

Further along, the Bobolinks were singing and we photographed a male on the wire.

At the same location, there were Eastern Kingbirds and a Savannah Sparrow.

A very enjoyable tour.
