Eagles and Herons

June 16, 2020

We went for an early morning spin in the boat to check on the eagles.  We found one of the adults at her usual perch near the front of Ile Gladu.  We located the nest, but it appeared to be empty.

We went around the west side of the island and photographed a pair of loons.

Barbara spotted some bass and sunfish in the shallows at the north end of the island.

Back on the east side, we saw our eagle again

.
This time an eaglet could be seen at the nest.  After a while, we could see a second head!

Bill went fishing for a while and checked out the tern nest, while Barbara checked on her vireos.

In the afternoon, we went to the heronry to see if there were any young.  All nests appeared to be deserted!  We went down the road to turn around, and coming back we saw ahead at the nearest nest. In fact, with binoculars, we could see a second head here too!

Coming back, we decided on a short hike at the top of the big hill down a logging/hunting road..  We did not see much until we were almost finished when a Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Chestnut-sided Warbler appeared.

After supper, we went for a paddle all around our bay.  Scenery and water birds were excellent.
