Avalon Stormwater Pond

 April 5, 2021

Lured by reports of American Bitterns, we decided to explore this east end pond for the first time.

It's quite a large pond and difficult to look for bitterns, which we did not see.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed the hike and the wildlife.  Ironically, Colin and Martha had been there earlier in the morning and had seen a bittern.

It was still early, so we decided to scout out Milton Road.  What a disappointment to see that all of the flooded fields were dried up and the geese departed.  Oh well, we were able to confirm baby ravens on the silo nest and had great views of a couple of American Kestrels.  On Frank Kenney, there was a small pond left with a pair of Green-winged Teals.

Time to head for home, but first let's check on the Great Horned Owl.  Mom was out of the nest, but it was hard to see her behind all the branches.  Can you see any babies in the nest?
