We decided to have a look for sparrows behind the airport. The LRT construction cuts right through the area, spoiling it somewhat for birding.
At the corner of Earl Armstrong and High Road, we saw an American Kestrel hunting.
We parked the car at the end of High Road, and immediately saw a bluebird. We were able to get quite close and observe it fly down and grab a caterpillar.
We hiked down the road to the big white ball. A Sharp-shinned Hawk flew right over our heads.
At the ball, we could hear a phoebe and soon tracked it down.
We thought about cutting through the field, but a dog walker with 8 dogs changed our minds. So we went back to High Road, and saw another bluebird along with many Tree Swallows.
Unsure of what to do next, we saw another dog walker arrive and go around the barricade; so we followed her in. We went as far as the LRT construction zone, then turned towards the field. It wasn't long before we hear the dropping ping-pong ball song of a Field Sparrow. We pished it in. While taking our photos w heard a Brown Thrasher just ahead.
We went to the Bowesville Road end and did a little rece. Then we headed to Earl Armstrong to check on the Great Horned Owl. Wow, there was nobody home! I guess they have fledged.
