Dunrobin & Vicinity

April 4, 2018

We just subscribed to an Ontario Owls group on Facebook, and saw that a Great Gray Owl had been seen in west Ottawa.  From past experience, I guessed that it must be in rural Dunrobin.  So we headed out March Valley Road and on to the 6th Line, 5th line, Dunrobin Road and Torbolton Ridge Road.  We did not see any owls, but had some good sightings nonetheless.

On March Valley Road, we saw a Great Blue Heron, Rough-legged Hawk, Hooded Mergansers and a Wild Turkey.

We did not see a lot, so stopped at the Hawk Watch site on Greenland Road, where Barbara spotted a distant raptor - Bald Eagle!  There were no blue birds on 5th Line, but an American Tree Sparrow and large White-tailed Deer were spotted on Berry Side Road.  We noted that all of the Osprey platforms were still unoccupied.

On Dunrobin Road, just before the village, we saw Common Ravens making a nest on a silo. We reported these to Langis Sirois who will be leading a ravens nesting trip for OFO later in the month.

A little further along, we saw 2 American Kestrels on the wires, and a third one later on Torbolton Ridge.

No owls, but a good day.
