There had been several good reports along this road near Navan, so we headed out. We stopped at the flooded Bear Brook to scan the geese. Our friend Martha came over to tell us where the elusive White-fronted Goose was hanging out. After a lot of scanning, we got a glimpse of it, but no chance for photos. Besides thousands of geese, we saw a few Northern Pintails, Mallards, and a single Green-winged Teal.
We carried on further up Milton Road hoping for a sighting on Tundra Swans, but they were not evident. So we turned west on Smith Road and pulled up behind Martha and Colin who were scanning for Sandhill Cranes and sparrows. Barbara honed in on a Song Sparrow.
Colin showed us a couple of cranes that were hunkered down in a distant ditch, barely visible from time to time in the scope. Martha and Colin headed out and, less than a minute later, two Sandhill Cranes flew in much closer to us.
We checked Milton Road again, and also Frank Kenny, but all we could see were Canada Geese. We headed out east beyond Bourget to Cobb Creek seeing one American Kestrel on a wire.. We have never seen so much flooding; it was all lake and virtually no waterfowl. Too bad.
We headed south to St Albert for ice cream, then home via back roads.
