Wild Goose Chase with OFO

April 14, 2019

Mark Gawn was not available to lead, so the very able Bob Cermak stood in.  With reports of Pink-footed Goose, Ross's Goose and Tundra Swans, we had our hopes up for a good day.

The group met at the Petrie Island causeway at 8 am. We had some waterfowl including Pied-billed Grebe, but the highlight was an American Bittern that flew over the road.

We proceeded to Tim's for a break and some carpooling.   Then it was off to Smith Road for Sandhill Cranes.  Bob finally spotted several really far off with his scope.

Next stop was Milton Road.  We saw a few Green-winged Teals and some Northern Pitails along with lots of Canadas and some distant Snow Geese  We also saw a distant perched Rough-legged Hawk.

At Frank Kenny, we saw a Greater White-fronted Goose among the Canadas.  It refused to raise it's head for a proper photo.  A large flock of Snow Geese came in overhead.

Bob decided to go to the Mer Bleue boardwalk to round out the outing.  A yellow-bellied Sapsucker was a first of spring for us.

Bob got an RBA that a Trumpeter Swan was on the Rideau north of Manotick, visible from Walter Upton-Collins Park, so we took a detour to check it out on the way home.  We also saw ducks and Tree Swallows on the river.
