Viewbank, Barnsdale, Twin Elm and TA Ravine

April 11, 2020

We decided to go car birding to Viewbank Rd, thinking correctly that nobody else would be there.  Our target was Vesper Sparrow, but there were none, only Song and American Tree Sparrows.  But there was a good show from a couple of Turkey Vultures.

Surprisingly, a couple of carloads of birders did show up as we were leaving.  We tried to bird along Barnsdale, but there was too much traffic and a narrow shoulder.  We turned onto Borrisokane Road when we noticed a good pull off spot.  There was a sizable pond that we had not known about, so we got out to investigate. There were Canada Geese and a few Mallards on the pond, but in behind, Bill spotted a Coyote while Barbara chased sparrows along the shore.

We decided to go north on Borrisokane Road for a bit and were rewarded with a soaring Red-tailed Hawk, then a couple more further away that we chased down Cambrian Rd.

We returned to Barnsdale Rd and drove over to Twin Elm to look for Osprey.  On the way, we stopped to view one of the Moodie ponds where we saw a few common Mergansers and Ring-necked Ducks.

We were in luck at Synagri; one of the pair was collecting sticks for it's nest.  They do this by snapping off branches from standing trees.

There was nothing else on the dead end, but we expect it to come alive soon with migrants.

In the late afternoon, we showed Grant our route through the ravine.  We got great views of a Brown Creeper and chased an Eastern Phoebe.

We climbed up out of the ravine and took the path back past the church.  Grant spotted a Northern Flicker on the grass, but it flew up to the trees half hidden.

We also spotted  Mallard in the park and a Mourning Dove on a rooftop for our bingo card.
